June 05, 2023: June 5 is World Environment Day, and every year on this date, people across the globe celebrate this day to bring awareness to the urgency of conservation and taking strategic steps to preserve the planet and its environment. Since 1973, this day has been held annually and is marked as a hallmark initiative by the United Nations to promote global awareness and action to protect the environment.
On its 50th anniversary, World Environment Day (2023) will focus on plastic pollution and how to beat it with solutions that can contribute to a better and sustainable world. While a day such as this or combined along with Earth day celebrated earlier in the year should be an everyday observation with action points, it is a fitting reminder to one and all, individuals, corporates, and organizations big and small to take note that it is mission critical for all of us to protect the only planet we have – for ourselves and our future generations.
Since their launch in 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has necessitated that organizations across the globe rally for the cause of organized and consistent action to achieve a sustainable future for the planet. There are 17 goals to be met of which, ‘Climate Action’ has garnered particular attention for purpose-driven efforts, especially in the MENA region where Exalogic Consulting is based. SDG Goal No 12 titled ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ is significant to this year’s theme - #beatplasticpollution.
As the United Nations points out, our planet is littered with plastic and choking with plastic pollution. To illustrate with an example, and to quote statistics released by the UN, ‘around the world, one-million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, and up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide, every year, ' making single-use plastic a part and parcel of our daily lives. These stats clearly indicate how plastic dominates our consumption today. Because of its over-excessive production and usage, plastic waste has become unmanageable. A lot of plastic waste in the oceans comes from rivers and lakes that carry plastic waste into the sea, polluting the marine life that exists within. For this, SDG Goal No 14, ‘Life Below Water’ is of relevance, pleading for action towards a cleaner ocean by 2030 and an earth without plastic waste.
At Exalogic Consulting, it is our purpose every day to show up for this mission towards a sustainable world, and World Environment Day is not the only day we act towards it. We work closely in partnership with SAP, and help companies enthused about sustainability and keen to adopt SDG goals by enabling their transformation with sustainable business models and processes. We leverage every powerful technology, SAP’s intelligent, modern and scalable business applications, and build innovative digital solutions that help businesses do more with less.
Our vision for a circular economy starts by leading with example – with our homegrown world-class product and circular economy solution RealCube that brings value by enabling waste management with smart waste bins and disposal, responsible consumption, reducing carbon, promoting local suppliers, and replacing plastic with recyclable wares for sustainable community living in cities. The adoption of our innovative solution by organizations reinforces our business goals and practices on sustainability as a priority and makes us proud of becoming an active contributor towards SDG 11, ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’.
At the individual level, our workforce stays committed in daily work practices such as eliminating single-use plastic in our offices, conscious in reducing waste, making green choices such as printing less, farm-to-office initiatives, promoting movements such as #greenfuturewithexalogic within the organization and continuing with our work on sustainable villages and a greener earth in partnership with The Good Living Trust.
